Can Leighton Meester sing?

Remember Blake from Gossip Girl's. Yes, the very same well heeled, sharp tongue Leighton Meester is trying her vocal chords at singing... The question is under all those perfect production sounds can she actually sing?

What is with actresses, especially the young upcoming variety, thinking they can sing? This time the turn of Gossip Girl star, Leighton Meester, aka Blake Lively. Leighton Meester wants to be a singer, and - in a page out of the Heidi Montag school of business - she has "leaked" a new song on the Perez Hilton's site.

The tune is called Birthday, and seems rather bad but it's hard to tell if she sings well or had a little "help" in the studio. History in the form of Hayden Panettiere and Lindsay Lohan, have tried and failed miserablly, so why then would the Gossip Girl actress, go cross genre when she hasn't still gotten a firm grip on this career? We can just wonder.

The other side of the coin seems to do fine though. Take Madonna and Barbra Streisand. As the Fuggirls point out in their New York Times blog, singers who turn actresses are probably just acting each note they reach, so actually acting isn't such a problem for them. But the singing girls are so used to emoting only when they don't get their hands on that limited edition Birkin bag, or when their boyfriend has taken a fancy for opium dens, and Thai hookers, that the singing didn't really seem like the most obvious next-best talent.
