Let the distributers fight it out! Reel up these golden old movies

With no new movies coming to your neighbourhood multiplexes, here are some of the movies we want to watch. Don't forget to add your own!

Cinema halls across the country are lackluster. Come weekends, the buzz that surrounds cinema halls, and movie theatres, has been conspicuously absent. The reason: drama courtesy the ongoing spat between distributes and producers on one side and the multiplex owners on the other. While, the IPl has much eye ball grabbing potential, the distributors have also contemplating showing old hindi films and world films, that don't see light of day in multiplexes.

Now, with plans to revisit the nostalgia of old films, multiplexes walk down memory lane with old films. With no concrete solution for the ongoing crisis, producers/distributors and multiplexes have yet to reach a consensus over several thorny issues that have snowballed into a major issue.

Reports say, that the delay in arriving at a solution will take about 6 to 7 weeks, and since that's the time it takes for the film promotions. So, no new movies till July means, we 're going to have to satisfy ourselves with the adage old is gold. Already film makers have re-opened Gajini and Dev D.

Here is our list of movies we would like to see in cinema halls:

Dil Se, 1998: Every shot of this beautiful film is celluloid poetry, coupled with an equally breathtaking soundtrack by AR Rahman, Dil Se, talked of terrorism at the height of the terrorist scare. Despite the fact that the film is slightly diluted by sketchy characteristation, this is a movie we would definitely revisit.

Silsila, 1981: Yash Chopra’s romantic drama Silsila opened in a disappointing 16 weeks in Mumbai. But we loved the way adultery was dealt with in the movie and the stellar performances by Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Badhuri (who came out of retirement for the film) and Rekha.

Kabhi Kabhi, 1976: Another Yash Chopra film, told the story of the young poet Amit (Amitabh Bachchan), and the young and beautiful Pooja (Rakhee Gulzar). Supposedly an art film disguised as a commercial venture, the film had its share of cynicism, but went on to become the biggest hit of the year.

Sholay, 1975: Endlessly analysed, overly remade, innumerably spoofed, and referenced, we would love to see the magic created by phenomenal characters of Thakur Baldev Singh, the evil Gabbar Singh, and the famous chemistry between Basanti and Veeru, on big screen again.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, 1995: The longest running film in Indian cinema, one of the biggest Bollywood hits of all times, Shah Rukh Khan's and Kajol in this Aditya Chopra film stood at the cornerstone of the changing face of Indian cinema. Also listed in the 1001 Movies To See Before You Die, the love story is top of the line in the echelons of love stories.

Anand, 1971: The tale of one man Anand Sehgal (Rajesh Khanna) who is dying of cancer, yet, lives life to the fullest, and inspires the pessimistic Bhaskar Banarjee who lives in complete contrast to him, dreary, dark and cynical. Love to see this tale of hope, light up theatre halls, with the legendry Gulzar's lyrics.

Trishul, 1978: One of his trademark angry young man performances, Amitabh Bachchan plays a son out to take revenge on the man, who made his mother pregnant and then deserted her.

Mr. India, 1987: In Bollywood's first sci-fi small budget film, India's first super hero Mr. India was born in the last 80's. With Anil Kapoor as the invisible hero in a double role and Amrish Puri in his famous Mogambo role, Sri Devi became Bollywood's most bankable heroin, and Shekar Kapoor left a nice little legacy for Indian cinema, before leaving it all for Elizabeth.

Mother India, 1957: India's first submission to the Academy Awards, Mother India touched upon various social ethos, with the core idea that revolved around the honor and integrity of womanhood. Nargis then in her late 20s, who depicted a much older, un glam woman, with brilliant satellite performances by Raaj Kumar, Sunil Dutt. The film in part a response to the trauma of Partition, also exemplified the suffering of the Indian woman, from beautiful bride to anguished mother and tiller of the soil.

Mughal-e-Azam, 1960: This epic film, took nine long years to finish and was the highest grossing film ever till Sholay. The film, based on the legend of the danseuse Anarkali's (Madhubala) doomed love story with Prince Salim (Dillip Kumar), had magnificent sets of epic dimensions, stupendous battle scenes and masterful dialogues. Karimuddin Asif (1924-1971) commenced work on his magnum opus, Mughal-e-Azam in 1944.

Roja, 1992: This phenomenally epic soundtrack from the stables of A.R. Rahman captured the hearts of many, and changed the face of Tamil music.Aside from a tragic love story set amongst militancy in Kashmir, we would love to see the movie again, if just to see Arvind Swamy set himself on fire!

Bombay, 1995: Set during the horrific December 1992 - January 1993 Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid controversy, religious tensions in Mumbai and violent rioting and violence in India, the love story between a Hindu and Muslim couple is one Mani Ratnam masterpiece we would love to watch again.

Dil Chahta Hai, 2001: The IT film of the X generation, Karan Johar's candy pop film, explores how love and relationships in a fast changing 21st century India. After a long wait, cosmopolitian Indian youth finally had a film that spoke their language.

Rock On, 2008: The first realistic depiction of the rock music in India, the first time we saw a half-way decent rock show, and stellar performances by an excellent cast. It wasn't that long ago, but we'd definitely see this one again.
