They evidently hadn’t encountered Alecia Beth Moore, who goes by the stage name Pink but doesn’t exactly play feminine as the overtones of the colour might imply. No, Pink is a hard-rocking, guitar-toting, expletive-mouthing, loud, rude and aggressive superstar, who believes in blowing minds by turning up the volume.

Avril Lavigne
Let not the fact that Avril Lavigne now has the surname Whibley firmly attached to her, detract any iota of appeal from her at once winsome and vicious persona. The Canadian punk rock princess has sold no less than thirty million albums worldwide and is one of the top ten earners in Canada according to a Forbes survey. Add to that songs like “Sk8er Boi” and “Girlfriend” and you have one of the most desirable women in rock ’n’ roll.

Amy Lee
It’s a darned shame that we don’t see more of the operatic Ms. Lee. The corrected figure, black hair tossed with wild abandon and the finest tinkling of ivories witnessed in a rock band in a long time, made Amy one of the most compelling women on the pop charts. Then she got into a disagreement with Evanescence co-founder Tom Moody and all but disappeared over the horizon. Sad.

Tarja Turunen
Ok, now we’re getting a bit serious here. Tarja can hold her own in symphoic opera settings with the same ease with which she could front the power metal intensity of a band like Nightwish.
On her own now, Turunen is out on a lengthy road trip promoting her new album, The Winter Storm, which has been going down a storm. It is the vocal range that does it, and the fact that Tarja could given any regal ice queen a run for her money.

Meg White
There are two ways to analyse the White Stripes’ drummer’s skills, or lack of. It may either be termed as simplistic beyond belief or it could be referred to as the simplicity of true genius. Whatever it may be, there’s no doubting the fact that the feral intensity with which she pounds the skin makes Megan Martha White a musician worthy of all red-blooded male desire.

Angela Gossow
Heavy-metal traditionally has been male bastion unassailable as it were, by the estrogen brigade. Until Angela Gosson strapped on her knee-length boots over leather tights and took on the daunting task of fronting extreme metallers Arch Enemy with seemingly nonchalant ease. The way she windmills her blond mane and stalks the stage like a woman possessed inspires a lot of men to try and tame her. Misguidedly.

Christina Scabbia
The words ethereal beauty and heavily amplified goth rock would, under ordinary circumstances, stand at opposite ends of the spectrum. But in Lacuna Coil vocalist Cristina Scabbia, they find a wonderful point of confluence. The Italian singer/songwriter forms the melodic counterpoint to the gruff grunts of fellow Coil vocalist Andrea Ferro and when she steps upto the microphone with her contralto range, its what sweet dreams are made of.

Otep Shamaya
By her own admission, Shamaya is a vegetarian, who writes meaningful poetry. All very noble undoubtedly, but what is she doing in a band that is badass to the bone and also features a chap called Evil Mcguire. And that is precisely the point. Her left principles notwithstanding, no one can do a low-down death-metal grunt quite like Shamaya. The dichotomy, it must be mentioned, is irresistible to men. And women.
