Brothers in bands
With the Jonas Brothers kicking it up as the hottest teeny bopper property in the Grammys and on Disney, we tracked the biggest brother and sister duos of the music world...Isha Singh Sawhney
The Gallagher brothers of Oasis:
When Noel Gallagher joined Oasis (formerly known as The Rain) he told his younger Liam brother, whose band it is, that he wanted to be the bands sole songwriter and leader. And though he took the Oasis from ignominy to epic heights, one image that will stick with the band is that of the fierce and very public sibling fights. From a crystal methed up Liam attacking Noel with a tambourine, to the brothers going out of their way to publicly diss each other, there is definitely one disgruntled brother in the mix.
The Followill brother of Kings of Leon:
Jared, Nathan and Caleb Followill were born in Tennessee, and spent most of their life travelling around with father, camping and decamping, for several days at a time, a United Pentecostal evangelist - leading to their an itinerant upbringing. Their music career that began with playing and singing at Pentecostal churches, did a 90 degree turn when they father was allegedly defrocked and left his wife. The brothers moved back to Nashville, were joined by their cousin Matthew, and post dabbling in Dixie-styled rock and roll, discovered the virtues of classic southern rock. With the unusual moniker derived from their grandfather and fathers name, Leon, the band that went onto achieve great commercial success, definitely knew how to keep it all in the family.
The Wilson brothers of the Beach Boys:
On a roller coaster ride of highs and lows, The Beach Boys were the epitome of American pop in the 60s and 70s. Their beginnings as America’s a Californian surf band, they were the only band able to challenge, (albeit briefly) the overarching success of The Beatles. But the Wilson brothers, (Brian, Dennis and Carl, who along with cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine made up the band) were fated to be haunted by tragedy after tragedy. Most stemmed from Brian’s – the bands producers and songwriter – escalating drug use, obsessive desire to trump the Beatles, that eventually led to a nervous breakdown, and then the deaths of Dennis and Carl Wilson in 1983 and 1998, respectively. Today, two bands (sans any of the Willson brothers) jostle for the name the Beach Boys.
The Gibb brother of the Bee Gees: The enormously successful Anglo/Australian trio of twins, Robin and Maurice and their elder brother Barry, gave us some of the biggest hits in their Beatleesque avatar of the 60s to a progressive pop sound to one of the most successful white soul act of all time during the disco era. Their extraordinary singing was rooted in the harmony between their voices. The trio had diverse voices and talent, and a remarkable ability to continually reinvent themselves. However, the band fell victim to internal bickering, pressures wrought by international stardom, fractious periods, a ludicrous series of lawsuits, breakups and getting back together.
