Named after an Austrian archduke, whose assassination triggered of the World War, they might have had a presage of starting a mini riot themselves by ascribing themselves to this name, which they have established themselves fairly firmly on the indie high ground, and aim to take it further with their third album Tonight.

Featuring a heavy influence of booming deep, resonant dub basslines, Franz Ferdinand treads somewhat treacherous territory bordering on the razor edge, which demarcates rock/pop with dance floor energy, and though there maybe a few nicks here and there, by and large they are set free unscathed.

Their fascination for historical heavyweights continues as they open the album with Ulysses, on a sparse bass groove, which lays the foundation for synth guitar riffs and rising choruses. Synth grooves laced with spaced psychedelic efforts are present throughout, and mark their stamp on Lucid Dreams, which ends into a drawn out space age hallucinatory club beat. Most other tracks are traverse territory, which lies between these, with some sheen emanating at times (No You Girls, Live Alone), but the dewey freshness is reserved at the end for Katherine Kiss Me.

And though their brand of music may have earned them the Mercury, it still seems that the cosmos is a large territory to conquer.
